What inspires metal drummer LUX to keep making music? Here’s a hint. It has something to do with carne asada tacos, Oaxaca, and stilletos. In a short period of time, LUX has achieved major credibility in the male dominated metal, hard rock, and indie/punk experimental scenes. Her signature drumming combines heavy metal double-bass with complex rhythms and dynamics, all while playing in stilettos and it doesn’t stop there. She also has the creative mind to incorporate elements of progressive and experimental rock rhythms.
What is your most distinct characteristic?
Playing in a metal band while wearing stilettos. Most drummers don’t do this ;D
What quality do you most admire in others?
Boldness and honestly are definitely up there and I especially admire people who are daring and unafraid of doing something spontaneous or different.
What quality do you most value in your friends?
Their sense of humor.
What is your Achilles’ Heel?
Not listening to music for 24 hours or longer! This can seriously take a toll on my mood haha. I grew up with music all around me,
always.
What is your idea of happiness?
To me happiness would be playing drums on a national tour for a couple months and then coming home on a Sunday night at my parent’s house sharing some of the best home made carne asada tacos and guacamole with my brothers and sisters as a welcome home dinner! I’ve done this before and it is seriously the best feeling ever… on a side note, I like my guacamole extra spicy.
What is your idea of misery?
Misery would be me being unable to play drums period. I would pretty much have to stay away from going to live shows as I would be unable to keep my eyes off the drummer!
What would you like to be?
I’d like to be a professional touring drummer and constantly tour the world. And to everyone around me, I wish to be able to influence people’s lives in a good way.
Can you share a joke with us?
I’m terrible at telling jokes! I’m more of the person on the other side, laughing at the jokes.
In what country would you like to live?
There are two countries I’d like to live in, one is here in the U.S. and more specifically in southern California and the other is in Oaxaca, Mexico which is where my family is from. Currently the majorityof my family is in Oaxaca.
Who is your favorite fictional character?
It’s a tie between Hello Kitty and Bubbles from the cartoon The Powerpuff Girls. Not only does she fight crime, she plays drums too!
Who is your favorite musician?
Hmm… favorite musician would be the drummer Chris Adler from Lamb of God. Everything he brings to the band’s songs seems effortless but yet heavy, and simple but yet intricate. He is an extraordinary drummer and is solid to a metronome. He’s a rare and well accomplished drummer who I personally look up to.
Who is your favorite artist?
Now this is a tough one since I am very open to music and listen to tons of it. Bjork is definitely one of my favorite artists, her music never gets old. As for world music, for a while I was hooked on the double violin duo Shankar & Gingger’s Celestial Body album. And now to get to the more heavier side of my favorites, I have to have my daily dose of metal and generally will listen to Lamb of God, Testament, and Necrophagist to name a few.
Who are your heroes in real life?
My heroes are my Mom and God.
What historical figure do you admire?
Not sure.
What do you most dislike?
Senseless violence.
What historical figure do you most despise?
Hitler.
What natural gift would you most like to possess?
The ability to fly or walk on water.
How would you like to die?
I’m not sure really, I used to want to die young but that would conflict with my plans to tour the world haha. I do know that when I die I’d like to be buried in the cemetery in Oaxaca where several family members are buried.
What is your present state of mind?
Full of energy and ready to get in the garage and practice drumming.
What is your motto?
Enjoy life and have fun enjoying it!
